I think it’s official: I took the bakeries in Germany for granted.
That’s not to say that bakeries in Wales are hopeless — they are just different. The desserts here are more likely to be cakes and muffins and cream puffs, and the breads are less varied. I miss walking past croissants and Apfelberliners in bakeries on every street. I miss the heavy, dense bread with thick crusts or interesting nuts and seeds in them. I can still picture my neighborhood bakery in Aachen. Why did I walk past it so often without going in?
But at least the two countries have some things in common. Germany has Kaffee und Kuchen in the afternoon, while Wales has afternoon tea. And I can still get good coffee here, so if I’m forced to have scones and Welsh cakes with my coffee after lunch, I won’t really complain. 🙂
Haha people always ask about the cakes and bread in Germany, and I think I’m the only one who doesn’t like either of them! I’m so happy to be back in Australia where I think the food (and coffee) is so much better! But Aachen did have the amazing Pasta Nudelmanufaktur…
